Probiotics: It's Overwhelming

With all the talk and research lately about the microbiome, probiotics are more important than ever. Probiotics are live bacteria that line your digestive tract and support your body’s ability to absorb nutrients and fight infection. It's so overwhelming, though, when you walk into the store and stare at the aisle of supplements. 100 billion bacteria, lactobiccilus, yogurt, kimchi......aahhhh!! Too much to filter through. Let's start with the basics:

Your gut is your second brain and it is filled with bacteria. This balance of good and bad bacteria makes a happy and balance gut. Many Americans experience gut dysbiosis or imbalance caused by poor food choices, unknown food sensitivities and allergies, stress, antibiotic overuse, and viruses. When your gut suffers, so does the rest of the body. Probiotics help fill your gut with the beneficial bacteria that it needs. For many, a yogurt a day is just not enough. So how do you decipher what is a good probiotic?

Diversity is key. A probiotic with various strains is best. Here are some good ones:

  • Bacillus coagulans

  • Bacillus subtilis

  • Bifidobacterium bifidum

  • Bacillus clausii

  • Lactobacillus plantarum

  • Lactobacillus fermentum

  • Lactobacillus reuteri

  • Lactobacillus acidophilus

  • Lactobacillus gasseri

  • Lactobacillus rhamnosus

  • Lactobacillus sporogens

  • Saccharomyces boulardii

If this is still overwhelming for you here are a few good brands to try:
