If I had to advise anyone to get one test it would be a nutrient panel. It would be hard to get this type of a panel with a general GP but many functional medicine docs should have it. I love my naturopath doctor, Dr. Axtell. She offers the test through a company called SpectraCell. To me, it makes the most sense to test your body to see what nutrients you are deficient in rather than take a general multivitamin. I have been vegan for 2 years and so I was interested to see what my results would be. Surprise, surprise I am well within range for calcium and protein levels! This is the most annoying question I get and I always assure people that it really isn't a problem. I don't even supplement for these 2, nor do I eat a large quantity of beans, tofu, or plant based milk daily. What I was deficient in surprised me.....B-vitamins. But, not even B12 (which is a concern of many vegans). The ones I was low in were big factors in hormone control and mood amongst other things. I had been feeling a little down lately and my melasma was also bugging me....all things B-vitamins had a hand in. So, I will take a B-complex supplement....easy fix. As well as chaste tree berry for hormone balance. Dr. Axtell was happy to see that my adrenals are almost healed completely and that my thyroid was also better than it had been in the past. The plant based lifestyle is really working for me and if I have to take a couple of supplements, so be it. Many get their cholesterol and CMP every year and think it's the only barometer of health. In reality it's not. If we only look at the iceberg on the surface of the water and don't examine the depths of where it originates, we never get a clear picture.
Maybe you've been feeling off and not getting the answers you want from your regular doctor or just being told that "it comes with age." Maybe you catch every cold that comes your way or you suffer from depression and anxiety. I would, strongly encourage, you to look deeper. This is not a plug for Dr. Axtell. I don't gain anything by recommending her services. I just know that she digs deep and she listens. Nutrient deficiencies are rampant today and they play an integral role in your health.
